U.S. EMBASSY LOME
Togo

October 10, 2007
Warden Message
Togolese Legislative Elections

The U.S. Embassy in Lomé would like to remind American citizens that Togolese legislative elections are scheduled for Sunday, October 14, 2007.  While there is considerable optimism about the election process, the potential for demonstrations or civil unrest can not be ruled out.  American citizens are urged to avoid large gatherings and street demonstrations and maintain security awareness at all times.  We wish to remind American citizens that even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly escalate into violence.  American citizens should also be aware that the land borders with Ghana and Benin will be closed all day on election day and are scheduled to reopen on Monday, October 15.  As a normal precaution the Embassy recommends that Americans keep extra supplies of food, water, and batteries at their homes.

Please be advised that the Consular Section will be closed for routine visa and non-Emergency American Citizen Services between October 7 – 21, 2007.  In case of an emergency you can call the Embassy’s main line at 261-5470 or 925-8478 to speak with a duty officer.

The U.S. Embassy encourages all Americans in country to register with the Embassy online at https://travelregistration.state.gov/ibrs/ui/ in order to receive informational messages and security updates as circumstances warrant.  All warden messages will be posted on the Embassy’s website at http://lome.usembassy.gov.

For the latest security information, Americans living and traveling abroad should regularly monitor the Department’s Bureau of Consular Affairs Internet web site at http://travel.state.gov, where the current Worldwide Caution, Public Announcements, and Travel Warnings resources can be found.  Up-to-date information on security can also be obtained by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll free in the U.S., or, for callers outside the U.S. and Canada, a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444.  These numbers are available from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday (except U.S. federal holidays).
