Warden Message
Togolese Legislative Elections
The U.S. Embassy in Lomé would like to advise American citizens that Togolese legislative elections are scheduled for Sunday, October 14, 2007. While there is considerable optimism about the election process, the potential for demonstrations or civil unrest remains. American citizens are urged to avoid political rallies and street demonstrations and maintain security awareness at all times. We wish to remind American citizens that even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly escalate into violence. American citizens are therefore urged to avoid the areas of demonstrations and to exercise caution if within the vicinity of any demonstrations. American citizens should also be aware that the land borders with Ghana and Benin are routinely closed during elections.
For the latest security information, Americans living and traveling abroad should regularly monitor the Department’s Bureau of Consular Affairs Internet web site at http://travel.state.gov, where the current Worldwide Caution, Public Announcements, and Travel Warnings resources can be found. Up-to-date information on security can also be obtained by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll free in the U.S., or, for callers outside the U.S. and Canada, a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444. These numbers are available from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday (except U.S. federal holidays).
Please be advised that the Consular Section will be closed for routine visa and non-Emergency American Citizen Services between October 7 – 21, 2007. In case of an emergency you can call the Embassy’s main line at 261-5470 to speak with a duty officer.
