Warden message on peanut butter products

WARDEN MESSAGE
U.S. EMBASSY LOME

Subject:  Possible Salmonella Contamination of Peanut Butter Products

Please circulate this warden message to American citizens in your area.

The U.S. Embassy would like to alert U.S. citizens to possible salmonella contamination of peanut butter products manufactured in the United States.  These products may have been distributed internationally.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is conducting an active investigation into the source of the Salmonella outbreak in the United States.  At this time, the FDA has confirmed that the source of the outbreak is a processing plant owned by Peanut Corporation of America.  This company provides peanut products to food manufacturers in the U.S to be used as an ingredient in many products, including cakes, cookies, crackers, candies, cereal and ice cream.
Based on this information, and on the current state of the investigation, the FDA recommends that consumers not eat products that have been recalled, but instead throw them away in a manner that prevents others from eating them.  If consumers cannot determine whether their peanut butter or peanut butter-containing products have contaminated ingredients, the FDA recommends that they do not consume those products.

The full list of recalled products in the United States related to the potentially contaminated materials is available at FDA’s website:
http://www.fda.gov/oc/opacom/hottopics/salmonellatyph.html#products.

Persons who think they have become ill from eating peanut butter are advised to consult their healthcare provider.
