Seventy-five Scholarship Students Complete Two Years of English Language Studies

On September 7th, 2006, during a ceremony held at the residence of the U.S. Ambassador to Togo, seventy-five high school students received their end of term certificates after completing two years of English language study funded by the U.S. Embassy.

In her opening speech, the director of the American Cultural Center, Mrs. Mary Daschbach, explained that the scholarship program was created by the U.S. State Department in 2003, to provide English language training to students from predominantly Muslim communities. More than ten thousand students from forty-five countries participate in the program. Ambassador David B. Dunn put a particular accent on the importance of language in enhancing mutual comprehension between people of different countries.

Seventy-five students from the Complexe Scolaire Islamique, the Agoe Lycee, and various madrasas in Lomé took part in the program over the past two years. Ten of these students will receive a scholarship to continue their studies at the English Language Center.  Sixty new students will begin the two year program this month.
