A Library for Orphans and Needy Children

On April 16, Mr. David B. Dunn, U.S. Ambassador to Togo, took part in the inauguration ceremony of a library built by the “Association Sainte Thérèse de l’Enfant Jésus” (STEJ) in Agoè, northern suburbs of Lomé.  The Minister for Communication, Culture and Civic Formation, the French Ambassador to Togo, and the head of the association also attended the ceremony.

The Self Help program of the U.S. Ambassador granted $6,675 to the STEJ, the equivalent of 3.360.000 francs CFA for the construction of a library at its children center in 2006. With the grant, STEJ built a large room for its extra curricular activities for needy children and orphans. The large reading room will also serve as a venue for various community meetings and workshops in relation to income-generating activities. The French Embassy supplied the library with books and other documents.

The Self-Help Program funds community-based development projects. Further information about application procedures is available from the development office at the U.S. Embassy in Lomé.
