Update on H1N1 Influenza
The U.S. Embassy in Lomé is issuing this Warden Message to American citizens in response to confirmed reports of H1N1 influenza (swine flu) in various countries around the world. We want to take this opportunity to provide some basic information about the illness. However, please be assured that to date, there are no confirmed cases of H1N1 influenza in Togo. If this situation changes, we will keep you informed.
H1N1 influenza is passed through aerosols; i.e., from coughing or sneezing. It can also be transmitted from a person's hands to their own nose. The symptoms are those of any respiratory flu, including fever, fatigue, cough and sometimes a sore throat or a runny nose. If you have symptoms like these, you should follow routine health advice and stay home until you are better. A person with the flu is most contagious during the first few days of the infection, although very small children sometimes remain contagious for up to 10 days.
The virus is killed by cooking so there is no danger from consuming properly cooked pork.
For further information about H1N1 influenza, please consult the Department of State information at http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/pa/pa_pandemic.html, the United States Centers for Disease Control website at http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu or the World Health Organization website at http://www.who.int/csr/disease/swineflu/en/index.html.
