International Education Week Observance in Togo

Lome, November 17 2005

On November 17 2005, the Public Affairs Section (PAS) of the U.S. Embassy Lome organized a series of activities at the University of Lome library to mark this year's International Education Week.  The highlights included a book exhibit of Nouveaux Horizons titles, reference materials, and books on studies in the U.S.; a PowerPoint presentation on undergraduate and graduate studies in American universities and colleges; a display of TOEFL, GMAT, GRE, and SAT preparatory materials; a presentation on student visa requirements by a Vice Consul of the U.S. Embassy in Lome; and a display of English Language books by the English Language Center.

This year's theme, "International Education, Improving Student Achievement around the World," reminded the youth of the borderless universe brought about by the Internet and the availability of information on a 24-hour basis.  With natural calamities on the rise, teachers are expected to teach students about the world beyond their own countries.

The official ceremony was presided over by the President of the University of Lome, Professor Nicoué Gayibor, (a former Fulbrighter), and a Vice Consul, John Corrao also the acting Public Affairs Officer, who represented the U.S. Embassy.

The program took place from 09:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the library of the University of Lome.  The response from the students, teachers, and the administrative personnel of the University was overwhelming.  For the first time, lecturers and researchers were given the possibility to access the latest InfoUSA online and were able to browse key websites on education, the U.S. Government and politics, law and other fields of interest.  During the Q&A part of the program,  students asked questions concerning topics such as how to obtain student visa, how to obtain scholarships in U.S. Universities, and how to apply for student loans.  The audience of nearly 400 students was nearly three times the size of last year's crowd.
