Ambassador’s Democracy and Human Right Fund Grants $60,000 USD to Six New Projects
On September 28th , 2007 Mr. David B. Dunn, U.S. Ambassador to Togo, signed grant agreements totaling $60,000 USD with representatives of six local non-governmental organizations specialized in such areas as promotion of the rule of law, increased participation of women and ethnic groups in the political process, and democracy and human rights for women, children, and handicapped people. The six projects are:
1- Femme de Demain
• Sensitization campaign to prevent violence against women
• Assistance towards women leaders and girls by establishing birth certificates in Aflao Sagbado and Sanguera
• Training women about their civil rights and duties to increase their participation in future elections
2- Radio Tchaoudjo
• Civic education through radio broadcasting on corruption and good governance during nine months in local language and French
3- Dimension Humaine (DH)
• Mass sensitization for the promotion of women rights and women leadership
• Training seminars for women, community, and religious leaders
4- Association Pour la promotion des Droits des Citoyens Togolais (APDCT)
• Sensitization campaign about young girls’ rights in the Savanes region to protect young girls against sexual abuse and harassment, trafficking, and female circumcision, and to promote education
5- Association Togolaise pour la Promotion Humaine (ATPH)
• Seminaries to train community leaders on the principles of democracy at the grass root level
6- Fédération Togolaise des Associations de Personnes Handicappées (FETAPH)
• Training program for educators on the rights and duties of individuals with handicaps
• Translation and distribution of Togolese law related to handicapped people’s rights in Kabyè and Ewé
