Public Affairs Section (PAS) - Lome Donates New Textbook Entitled "American Studies: Selected Texts and Activities for Togolese High Schools" to the Togolese Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education

Lome, August 9, 2005

Ambassador Charles Twining, Chargé d'Affaires a.i. of the U.S. Embassy in Togo donated three thousand five hundred copies of a book entitled "American Studies: selected texts and activities for Togolese High School" to the Togolese Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education on August 9th 2005.  The official ceremony took place in the office of Mr. Selom K. Klassou, the Togolese Minister of Primary and Secondary Education who also received the donation on behalf of the Togolese Government.

The book was designed and published by PAS Lome under the supervision of Professor Donette Artenie-Brantner of Georgetown University in collaboration with sixteen Togolese English Language Inspectors from the Teacher Training Institute of Togo - Direction de la Formation Permanante de l'Action et de la Recherche Pédagogique (DIFOP).

This project was launched in 1994 with the intention of satisfying the growing interest in the United States expressed by the Togolese youth who will eventually become future leaders.  The main objective of the project is to support culture-rich English language instruction programs in secondary schools by providing adequate information on the U.S. society and culture.

The book comes as a replacement to the existing American Studies curriculum.  It will help Togolese secondary school students cultivate linguistic skills and to have a better understanding of the fundamental values of U.S. society.
